Texas Instruments announces its UCD9240 digital pulse-width modulation (PWM) system controller that manages point-of-load power systems in instrumentation, communications and computing. In addition, complementary digital PowerTrain modules, the PTD08A006W, PTD08A010W and PTD08A020W, further simplify DC/DC converter design by providing space-saving packaging and convenience. A fully configurable multi-output and multi-phase, non-isolated DC/DC PWM controller controls as many as four voltage rails and as many as eight phases. It supports switching frequencies up to 2 MHz and closed-loop resolution up to 1 mV. It has a hardware-accelerated compensator with non-linear gain for improved transient performance that reduces output capacitance requirements, and it supports multiple soft-start and soft-stop configurations, including pre-bias start-up. Multiphase configuration allows for current and temperature balancing as well as phase adding and shedding.
