Radiotronix announces the embedded wireless module Wi.232DTS. The module combines a high-performance wireless DTS spread-spectrum transceiver, based on the Xemics XE1203, with a protocol controller to create a transparent wireless solution for wire replacement applications. The Wi.232 is designed to be a direct replacement for RS-232/422/485 wiring. The Wi.232 can be used in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint applications. The module contains a true MAC layer with several key features that are suited for embedded applications. Variable length packets allow for efficient data transfers, conserving power and increasing utilization. All data packets are checked for errors using a 16-bit CRC; bad data packets are thrown away. Multiple modules can communicate on the same channel because of the built-in carrier-sense-multiple-access (CSMA) protocol. The module operates in two power modes. In high power mode, the transmit power is up to +11 dBm, the maximum RF data rate is 152.34 kbit/second, and 36 channels are supported. In low power mode, the transmit power is 0 dBm, the maximum RF data rate is 38.4 kbit/second, and 80 channels are supported. With their receiver sensitivity ( 110 dBm @ 4.8 kbit/second), a pair of Wi.232 modules can communicate over distances of 500 to 800 feet indoors and 1500 to 2500 feet outdoors. The module is available in a pick-and-place compatible surface mount package measuring .8 × .97 × .08 inches.
