The pair used iDigi™ wireless development kits to develop a prototype system for The Palms of Destin Resort in Destin, Fla. that monitors energy consumption throughout the hotel. The system is designed to sync with the hotel’s property management system and initiate energy saving actions such as automatically turning off hot water heaters and lights and adjusting room temperature and humidity based on occupancy.
H2Options, Inc. was awarded $5,000 as the second place winner for developing a water fixture monitoring system that detects water fixture leakage and alerts maintenance personnel of the leak and its specific location. This helps building owners save on utility costs and conserve water.
Team Hilotec also earned $2,500 for third place by developing an intelligent home automation system that anticipates human activity and monitors temperature, light and motion sensors. The system uses this information to determine energy saving actions such as automatically opening and closing room vents.
“We were impressed with each outstanding contest submission that we received throughout the year,” said Joel Young, CTO and senior vice president of research and development, Digi International. “However, Team Hilotec elevated their utilization of the iDigi kits to develop a solution that demonstrates a strong environmental impact with great potential for real-world applications. iDigi development kits include the hardware, hosted software and services necessary to easily develop wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. Kicked off at ESC Silicon Valley 2009, the green design contest ran from April 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. Contestants were required to use one of three iDigi wireless development kits, but were not required to use Digi components exclusively for a design. Contest categories included energy saving for electrical consumption, energy saving for water consumption, energy saving for natural gas or fuel consumption, and eliminating or monitoring air pollution.
