Magnetic levitation has been around for years, but has been made publically available until relatively recently. Most devices with levitation capabilities can only perform this task with one particular object and while this is can be considered a substantial advancement in modernized technology, it does provide distinct limitations on levitation devices.
The Chicago-based startup Levitating Design Labs has a new product that’s capable of levitating multiple items, using electromagnetic suspension technology. Known as Levitation X, the device offers a variety of accessories to hover directly above its base plate like drinking glasses, plant pots, pillow watches, dinner plates, and even decorative 3D-printed pieces.
Levitation X is easy to set up, starting by slotting the proprietary levitation assist plate on the base and placing the particular object you’d like to float on the base. Gently remove the plate and the desired object will float about an inch above the ground. The selected object will even start rotating if you give the object a light tap. The device offers two levitation bases to choose. The larger base is wireless and uses a rechargeable battery, while the second base is slimmer and needs an AC power source to work.
The developers at Levitating Design Labs say they strongly pushed for the device to have a square base instead of a round one. Square bases can be easily placed alongside each other, which would form a large-scale surface to levitate multiple objects at once. The startup team is currently on Kickstarter, and is looking to hit a $35,000 fundraising goal.
Early offers for the device include the $150 base plate, along with additional accessories like plant pots, watch pillows, and decorative 3D-printed pieces that can be sold anywhere from $20-250. The development team’s goal is to come out with new levitating products every month, and aim to start shipping the Levitation X by June.
