- Some types of plaque are deemed “vulnerable,” meaning that they are more likely to detach from the artery wall and cause heart attack or stroke. Existing technologies are capable of determining if plaque is present in the arteries, but can’t tell if it is vulnerable, so researchers from North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed a dual-frequency ultrasound device that could help identify so-called vulnerable plaque and enable a more accurate diagnosis for at-risk patients. This dual-frequency intravascular ultrasound transducer operates on two frequencies, and transmits and receives acoustic signals, making it easier to detect contrast agents used for molecular imaging and vasa vasorum detection.
- DARPA has created the Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System, or ALIAS, program, to help overcome the challenges and complex interfaces that military aircrafts present to operators. According to DARPA, ALIAS envisions a tailorable, drop‐in, removable kit that would enable the addition of high levels of automation into existing aircraft to enable operation with reduced onboard crew. The program intends to leverage the considerable advances that have been made in aircraft automation systems over the past 50 years, as well as the advances made in remotely piloted aircraft automation, to help reduce pilot workload, augment mission performance and improve aircraft safety.

If you’re not in your home, you will instantly receive an alert on your smartphone app that will include two buttons: one to call the police, the other to forward the alert to your friends, family, and neighbors.
- TDK Corporation and WiTicity have announced an intellectual property license agreement that will enable TDK to commercialize WiTricity’s patented technology to create efficient and high-performance wireless charging systems for carmakers, allowing next generation electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to charge effortlessly by parking over a TDK wireless charging pad. Carmakers around the world have identified wireless charging as a key differentiator in the marketplace because of the convenience it offers vehicle owners. International standards for wireless charging systems are being developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
