Meaghan's Minute: Cloud-Based Communication

Tue, 03/25/2014 - 12:36pm
Eric Sorensen, Coordinator of Multimedia Development

Today on Meaghan's Minute, brought to you by API Technologies, Volvo is further developing its cloud-based infotainment, which it recently partnered with Ericsson to create.

As part of a safety-focused pilot project, Volvo has placed 50 test vehicles on Scandinavian roads. Each vehicle is able to automatically communicate real-time data about road conditions with each other and road administrators.

So here is how it works: When bad road conditions are detected by the test vehicle, road friction information is transmitted via the mobile phone network to Volvo Cars’ database. A warning is then transmitted to nearby vehicles, warning other drivers approaching the hazard. An alert is also sent to road maintenance authorities to help improve the management of dangerous conditions.
