Sprint Backs Out of Partnership with WiMAX Provider Clearwire

Thu, 11/15/2007 - 7:12am
Sprint Nextel announces that it has backed out of its plans to partner with WiMAX provider Clearwire to build a nationwide WiMAX network. The company said in a statement, "[We] could not resolve complexities associated with the letter of intent and failed to reach final agreement on the terms of the transaction."In July, Sprint and Clearwire signed a "letter of intent" to connect their WiMAX networks and share the cost of building a national wireless network that was planned to reach 100 million customers by the end of 2008.

Sprint says it "remains fully committed to developing WiMAX services and deploying a WiMAX network," but that it plans to review its business plan, and will release more details early next year. The company also reiterated that it is on track for a commercial launch of WiMAX services in the Chicago and Baltimore/Washington markets in 2008. The carrier also said that it expects to continue to work with Clearwire in the future.
