Agilent Technologies introduces an ambient light photo sensor that increases mobile phone battery life by eliminating unnecessary backlighting. In addition to mobile phones, the sensors are an suitable power savings solution for PDAs, notebook PCs, portable DVD players, MP3 players, camcorders, and digital cameras. The sensors emulate the human eye in detecting the amount of ambient light, and signal the mobile phone to turn on its display´s backlight and keypad light if necessary. The analog-output HSDL-9001 is half the size at 0.6 × 2.0 × 1.5 mm. It is supplied in a quad-flat no-lead surface mount package. The device, which contains no analog to digital circuitry, provides greater design flexibility by allowing the signal processing and digitization to be implemented through other means, such as the host processor.
