Since 1991, RF Micro Devices has grown from a small design house into one of the biggest players in the wireless market. Greensboro, North Carolina is home to RFMD's corporate headquarters.

RF Micro Devices carried out an aggressive module strategy, because it recognized the important benefits module-based products provide its customers greater ease of assembly, smaller form factors, accelerated time-to-market and lower cost.
The Company's automated production line contains all required technologies to assemble multi-chip modules (MCMs), including surface mount device (SMD) attachment, die-attach, wirebond, encapsulation, singulation and marking.
Matching Technology to Product
RF Micro Devices led the wireless market in the adoption of GaAs HBT and is the world's largest manufacturer of GaAs HBT semiconductors. The Company also specializes in silicon germanium, silicon CMOS, silicon BiCMOS and GaAs MESFET process technologies that address a wide range of RF applications. The Company's design expertise in these five major semiconductor technologies drives its Optimum Technology Matching® (OTM) strategy. Through OTM, RFMD® engineers match the appropriate process technology and device technology to each product according to the best possible combination of price and performance.
RF Micro Devices wisely invests in its research and development capabilities to develop next-generation semiconductor processes, circuits, architectures, standards and packaging.
In May 2001, RF Micro Devices announced a strategic alliance with Agere Systems, within which RFMD owns silicon semiconductor manufacturing equipment in Agere's Orlando manufacturing facility.
This silicon manufacturing line will enable RFMD to better serve its customers by lowering wafer costs, reducing cycle times and accelerating the development of modules integrating various process technologies.
It will also help the Company expand its product portfolio.
The strategic alliance also provides a framework for Agere Systems and RFMD to cooperate in the development of new wireless products and next-generation silicon processes.
Mixed-Signal Design and Integration
A technical approach unique to RFMD utilizes mixed RF signals. Engineers put precision analog circuitry to work in conjunction with digital circuits. Compatible interface technology permits analog functions on primarily digital chips, and vice-versa; the resulting integrated circuits allow digital interfacing with host device components.
RF Micro Devices' on-chip integrated functions replace specialized microwave devices that cost time, money and space. Since chips feature integrated function and system design, engineers can create wireless versions of their designs without devising complex RF circuitry.
Each highly integrated package is a multi-function miniature system. Components are designed with inherent flexibility; the same product can be used in varied applications without modification. Mixed-signal ICs integrate smoothly with DSP technology, paving the way for wireless products previously considered impractical because of performance, size or cost limitations.
Design, Development, Testing
From schematic capture and simulation to design rule checking and parametric feedback, RFMD implements state-of-the-art CAD/CAE tools to ensure product performance. To save time and increase efficiency, RFMD engineers develop and evaluate all prototypes in the company's own testing facilities. For customer evaluation of our products, RFMD offers custom demo boards, application notes and supporting documentation.
RF Micro Devices is committed to maximizing its manufacturing, test capacity and design resources as they significantly reduce cost structure and cycle times, which gives the Company increased flexibility in meeting customers' demands.
RF Micro Devices owns and operates two fabrication facilities and is committed to supporting its silicon product line as it grows. The Company currently operates five design centers and seven sales and support offices located worldwide. RFMD has started construction on a test and tape and reel facility in Beijing, China.
Powerful Products, Multiple Markets
RF Micro Devices manufactures a broad array of products, including power amplifiers, mixers, modulators, low noise amplifiers, receivers, gain blocks and transceivers, thereby providing its customers a "one-stop" solution for all their RFIC needs.
RFMD products serve varied communications markets. Applications include cell phones, wireless infrastructure, cable television modems, personal communication systems and two-way data pagers. The Company is also targeting developing markets, such as wireless local area networks (WLAN) and Bluetooth(tm) wireless technology.
To ensure cost efficiency and reliable performance, RFMD utilizes fully automated offshore packaging processes, as well as extensive on-site automated testing. Whether a design calls for one of the company's standard SOIC configurations or a custom package, RFMD can deliver high-volume lots for commercial and consumer markets.
