Voltage-Output DACs

Analog Devices has introduced a family of octal 8-, 10- and 12-bit buffered voltage-output digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that operate from a single 2.5-V to 5.5-V power supply and consume only 1.4 milliamps (max.) at 3 V. Rail-to-rail outputs provide maximum headroom and dynamic range in low voltage, single supply applications. The 8-bit AD5308, 10-bit AD5318 and 12- bit AD5328 utilize a versatile three-wire serial interface that operates at clock rates up to 30 MHz and is compatible with standard SPI™, QSPI, MICROWIRE and DSP interfaces. Integrating eight DACs on one chip, these converters are designed for space-constrained applications in optical networking, automatic test equipment, mobile communications, industrial process control, and portable, battery-powered instruments.

A power-down feature reduces the current consumption to 400 nanoamps at 5 V (120 nanoamps at 3 V). Each of the eight channels of the DAC can be individually powered-down for flexible and incremental power management. The DACs are pin-compatible, allowing engineers to select the correct resolution without having to redesign the circuit board. Data is entered as a 16-bit word consisting of 1 control bit, 3 address bits, and 12 data bits. The unused LSBs are ignored in the lower resolution parts, so the DACs can also be made software-compatible.
