SMT Switch

Mon, 12/03/2001 - 3:38am
Designed to be compatible with surface-mount processes, the KMS microminiature side-actuated tactile switch from ITT Industries, Cannon represents the next step in small side-actuated switch components, measuring a mere 4.6 by 3.5 by 1.42 mm. Available in a single-pole, single-throw configuration with normally-open contact, the switch features a sharp tactile feedback.

Typical applications encompass mobile phones, pagers, PDAs, laptops, DVD players, CD-ROMs, keyless entry systems and automotive electronics, through to health care electronics. The switch offers designers a large hard plastic actuator, robust construction, 4 solder terminals and a ground terminal on the switch case. To maximize safety in vacuum pick and place operations, KMS Series have a large flat top in its entirety (i.e., no holes or bumps).

Technical specifications include a maximum contact voltage of 50 VDC, minimum/maximum current ratings of 1 mA/50 mA, and bounce of less than 3 ms. Life expectancy is 100 K operations and contact resistance is less than 100 milliOhms. Operating temperature is -40 to 85 degrees Celsius for switches with silver contacts and -40 to 125 degrees Celsius for gold contacts.

Designed for surface mounting, the switches are packaged on continuous tape in reels holding 3, 000 parts, compatible with all major pick-and-place machines. Sealed against dust and flux ingress, the switches are suitable for infrared soldering processes and can also be used in lead-free soldering processes.
