M/A-COM, a unit of Tyco Electronics, announced the OpenSky M-803 Mobile Radio. Like all radio products in the OpenSky IP, packet-switched network, the M-803 uses digital TDMA technology to increase spectrum efficiency and provide all the benefits of a secure voice and data solution at a 19.2 Kbps data rate. The M-803 mobile radio is the company's 2nd generation software-based digital radio.

The M-803 features trunked voice and data for efficient communications, IP and CDPD-based open interface for real-time mobile data applications, full-duplex operation for rapid data transfer, Integrated GPS for automatic vehicle location, over-the-air software downloading to reduce maintenance and upgrade costs, multi-mode operation for compatibility with Conventional FM and APCO-25 common air interface, and encryption for secure communications.

The M-803 is also the key building block in a Vehicle Tactical Network Configuration (V-TAC), where in conjunction with a trunk-mounted mobile base unit and RF combiner, the M-803 provides critical in-building coverage for portable radios. The V-TAC is either automatically or manually activated to maintain network connectivity.
