2-Phase DC/DC Converter

Tue, 10/30/2001 - 8:03am
The ADP3203 and ADP3415 is the first 2-phase controller/drivers chip set on the market that is fully compliant with the next-generation Intel® Mobile Voltage Positioning (IMVP) specification, and is also backward-compatible with IMVP-II. This key feature allows OEMs to use the same solution for both Intel mobile Pentium® III processors and the forthcoming mobile Pentium® 4 processors-without modifying their motherboards. Intel's IMVP specification is designed to maximize the operating time of notebook computers by carefully managing the processor's core voltage frequency while maximizing CPU performance.

Key features of the ADP3203 include pin selectable 1-phase or 2-phase operation, backward compatibility with earlier IMVP-II, and forward compatibility with the latest IMVP specifications. It also includes highly accurate core voltage offsetting, safe detection of the core's VID code at power up, adaptive noise blanking for speed and stability, and highly redundant over-voltage and under-voltage protection. These features make the ADP3203 an attractive solution for mobile voltage regulator designers working with computer manufacturers to improve notebook computer performance. If used in a 2-phase configuration, the chip set delivers up to 40 A to the CORE, with two ADP3415 dual MOSFET drivers. Operating in unison, the devices efficiently drive the power MOSFET switches of a non-isolated synchronous buck power converter topology. Computer OEMs can now build a dedicated dual-phase core converter solution with well-balanced current sharing and superior transient response.
