Current Sense Transformers

Fri, 09/28/2001 - 9:40am
Pulse announces a new series of 35-amp surface mount current sense transformers for the DC/DC converter market. Applications range from industrial controls and medical instruments to RAID arrays and high performance network servers. Functions include feedback control, overload sensing, load drop or shutdown detection. They are specifically designed to detect AC current changes and supply an output for control circuitry.

The series is rated for currents up to 35 amps and includes three common turns ratios, 1:50, 1:100 and 1:200 with inductance values of 80, 180 and 320mH, respectively. These high-current transformers, have a maximum height of 0.394 inch for high-density and low-profile DC/DC converter applications. The flat-top design with the fixed clip makes them ideal for pick and place applications.

The key feature of these transformers is their ability to develop a relatively accurate control and/or indicating signal without imposing a high resistance to the current. Resistance at high current levels results in significant heat, a detrimental factor in surface mount components and compact designs.

Packages in the PB0025, PB0026, and PB0027 series are available in 80 to 320 mH inductance values with direct current (DC) bias current ranges up to 35 amperes (amps) alternating current (AC)rms. Turns ratios are available from 1:50 to 1:200. The transformers are rated for optimal performance at 50 kHz and above.
