Buck Converter IC

A new buck converter IC with a selectable dynamic adjustable power output was announced by Siliconix Incorporated. The new device, which works in pulse skipping modulation (PSM) and bypass modes, consumes minimal power and will thus extend battery life in cellular and cordless phones, notebook computers and PDAs.

The new Vishay Siliconix Si9172 has an input voltage range of 2.7 V to 6 V and a dynamic adjustable output of 1.5 V to 3.6 V. When operating in PSM mode, it converts power with greater than 90% efficiency at a 170 mA load. In bypass (BP) mode, the Si9172 guarantees to deliver 800 mA with a typical 95% efficiency.

The Si9172 requires low quiescent currents of 220 μA is PSM mode and 110 μA in bypass mode, with a shutdown current of just a μA. In the PSM mode, the output voltage regulation of the Si9172 can be adjusted by an external analog voltage signal at the ADJ pin. An on-board MOSFET simplifies converter designs by reducing component count. Integration protection features include undervoltage lockout, power-on reset, soft-start and over temperature protection.
