Apex Microtechnology has long been recognized as the industry leader in high voltage and high current power operational amplifiers for applications in the industrial controls, ATE, aerospace, medical and military markets. Apex has now applied that expertise to growing need in the Telecommunications market for high voltage, low quiescent current multi-channel amplifiers, or multi-channels ICs, to drive capacitive loads in MEMS-based optical switch applications.

The new Apex MA32 is an industry first, precision 32-channel, high voltage IC that is a monolithic solution housed in a 240-pin Quad Flat Pack (QFP). With a foot print measuring less than 1.5 inches square, the MA32 drastically reduces the board space requirements in switching circuitry that can include more than 1,000 3D mirror arrays requiring two amplifier drivers per channel per mirror. This application of using high voltage to drive capacitive loads is similar to design-wins for other Apex high voltage op amps — piezo electrical positioning.

The MA32 features high voltage operation up to 300 V and output voltage up to 290 V per channel. It also addresses a key requirement for extremely low quiescent current with less than 100 μA per channel. This IC is designed for independent channel operation using the output of a digital to analog converter (DAC) to drive each input. The gain for each driver is internally set for 50 V/V.
