Surface-Mount Chip Attenuators

A new series of surface-mount thick film chip attenuators that offers the industry's widest impedance and attenuation range for this device type has been announced by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. The Vishay Dale CZA chip attenuators will provide improved attenuation in a single device as compared to three or more discrete resistors. Additional benefits include lower overall component costs, board space and weight savings for the manufacture of communications, automotive, and consumer electronic products.

Designed to provide a specific impedance and attenuation in an unbalanced p-type configuration, the CZA series will be used for signal attenuation in the RF section in cell phones and wireless information appliances, and in a range of applications in automotive and consumer entertainment systems. The range of impedance options (50 Ω/ 75 Ω/300 Ω/600 Ω) and an attenuation range from 0.5 dB to 20 dB is the industry's broadest. Both 40mW CZA04S and 75mW CZA06S maximum input power options are available.

Electrical and environmental performance are superior compared to discrete thick film resistor chips. Attenuation tolerance of ± 0.3 dB to ± 1.6 dB, temperature coefficient of resistance is ± 100 ppm/C and a maximum voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.2 results in improved signal quality.

The CZA04S chip attenuator is a surface mount device measuring 0.039 by 0.039 (1 mm by 1 mm), while the CZA06S measures 0.063 by 0.059 (1.6 mm by 1.5mm). The component height is 0.014 (0.35 mm) and 0.020 (0.5 mm) respectively.
