Siri Coming to Chevrolet Cars in Early 2013
Legend has it that late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs once dreamt of an iCar . That dream will be one step closer to reality in early 2013 when General Motors introduces Apple’s chatty voice assistant Siri into several of its car models.
The feature will be available to iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 owners, and Siri will be working through these cars’ standard Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.
To minimize distractions while driving, Siri will be available in “Eyes Free” mode, meaning users will be able to interacting with it without their iPhone’s screen lighting up.
As far as features go, users will be able to make hands-free calls to contacts on their iPhone, play songs in their iTunes library, listen to, compose and send messages and add appointments to calendar.
Complex questions to Siri that require displaying a web page will not work, GM says .
Other car manufacturers such as BMW and Honda have also announced Siri integration, but GM tries to differentiate itself by making the feature available in small cars first.
“It says a lot about our commitment to small-car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars.
