Qualcomm President and COO Steve Mollenkopf to Speak at IMS2012
Qualcomm President and Chief Operating Officer Steve Mollenkopf will be the plenary session speaker on Monday, June 18 at the IEEE MTT-S 2012 International Microwave Symposium (IMS).
As a pioneer of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, Mollenkopf will address the design complexity and deployment challenges of 3G and 4G chipsets drives in his talk “3G/4G Chipsets and the Mobile Data Explosion.”
“Mollenkopf is ideally positioned to provide an acute and authoritative perspective on microwave technology and business,” said Dr. Ke Wu, IMS symposium general chair. “His experience allows him to provide deep insight into how device and network complexity will result in significant opportunities for the industry.”
Closing IMS2012 is Dr. Thomas H. Lee, Stanford University professor and director of the Microsystems Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr. Lee will present his vision of the future of microwave and internet technology in his talk, “The Fourth Age of Wireless and the Internet of Everything.”
“Dr. Lee is a pioneering scholar uniquely equipped to illustrate the huge opportunity for RF engineers that lies ahead in the challenges and opportunities in the future of wireless,” said Dr. Wu.
IMS2012, with a theme of “Microwaves without Borders,” will be held June 17-22, 2012 in Palais des Congrès de Montreal as the centerpiece of Microwave Week 2012. In addition to IMS2012, Microwave Week includes the collocated RFIC Symposium and the ARFTG Conference.
Since 2008, Mollenkopf has led Qualcomm’s semiconductor business, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT), and served as executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm. A published IEEE author, Mollenkopf holds patents in areas including power estimation and measurement, multi-standard transmitter system and wireless communication transceiver technology. He serves on the board of directors for the Semiconductor Industry Association and serves as a member of the board executive committee and CEO council for the Global Semiconductor Alliance.
Mollenkopf holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Dr. Lee received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His graduate work at MIT resulted in the world's first RF CMOS IC in 1989. Since 1994, Dr. Lee has been a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University, where his research focus is on silicon RFIC technology. In 2011, he received the Ho-Am Prize in Engineering (colloquially known as the "Korean Nobel") for his RF CMOS work. He has also received several "Best Paper" awards at ISSCC and CICC, and is a Packard Foundation Fellowship recipient.
Dr. Lee served for a decade as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer of the Solid-State Circuits Society, and has also been a Distinguished Lecturer of the Microwave Society. He holds 57 U.S. patents and has authored six books, including “The Design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits” and “Planar Microwave Engineering”. He also cofounded the memory company Matrix Semiconductor (acquired by Sandisk in 2006) and Ayla Networks.
