A system that uses ultrasound technology to look inside car engines could lead to more efficient engines – and huge fuel savings for motorists. Ultrasound scans have long been a fundamental tool in healthcare for looking inside the human body, but they have never before been put to use in testing the health of a modern combustion engine.
Intel will be ready to produce its next-generation mobile processors at high volumes in 2013, the company said at an industry conference yesterday. The new chips will use Intel's 22-nanometer technology, already present in current PCs and Macs. It's harder to integrate new chip tech in mobile processors because of their system-on-a-chip (SoC) nature, which includes things like RAM and graphics (those components are typically separated on a PC).
Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek announced its first quad-core SoC (System on chip) processor Tuesday, the first of its kind to hit the market. “Its not the first one announced, it’s the first one shipping, ” MediaTek spokesperson Finbarr Moynihan told Mashable during a demo of the new mobile processor earlier this week.
Young Americans may not buy many print newspapers, but they do enjoy a "print-like" reading experience. A joint survey of news consumers from the Pew Research Center and The Economist found that 60% of Americans under the age of 40 prefer a traditional, print-like news reading experience on tablets, free of interactive components like audio and video.
Apple is currently testing several TV set designs, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing unnamed sources from Apple's supply chain. The company is reportedly working with China's Hon Hai (better known as Foxconn) and Japan's Sharp on the design of the new television. This doesn't mean we'll see an Apple TV set very soon, though, as these prototypes are still far from hitting the market.
A Bluetooth-enabled scale is one of those gadgets you think you don't really need until you have one. With a wireless scale you can have your weight (and in some cases BMI and body fat percentage) sent to a private account associated with the scale where you can track your weight overtime.

Think that clicking “delete” will actually delete your email? Think again. When a user “deletes” an email in the normal fashion, it becomes invisible to that user and is immediately a candidate to be overwritten. But until it is in fact overwritten, it exists. And it may persist longer on company servers.

Princeton researchers have found a simple and economic way to nearly triple the efficiency of organic solar cells, the cheap and flexible plastic devices that many scientists believe could be the future of solar power. The researchers, led by electrical engineer Stephen Chou , were able to increase the efficiency 175 percent by using a nanostructured "sandwich" of metal and plastic that collects and traps light.
As technology advances, it tends to shrink. From cell phones to laptops—powered by increasingly faster and tinier processors—everything is getting thinner and sleeker. And now light beams are getting smaller, too. Engineers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have created a device that can focus light into a point just a few nanometers (billionths of a meter) across—an achievement they say may lead to next-generation applications in computing, communications, and imaging.
While NASA is placed on the back burner due to U.S. President Barack Obama 's plan to cut the agency's planetary science funding , its private counterpart SpaceX has been green-lit to return to space. The United States Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center awarded two Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV)-class missions to the company: DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) and STP-2 (Space Test Program 2).
