Oracle to Buy Acme Packet for about $2.1B

Oracle will buy Acme Packet Inc., which makes equipment for telecommunications companies, for about $2.1 billion. Acme's gear is used by more than 1,900 service providers and enterprises around the world. Its technology will complement Oracle's offerings for telecoms providers, said Citigroup analyst Walter Pritchard.

The new Amber Alert system replaces a prior "opt-in" system that went offline Dec. 31 and alerted about 700,000 people who had signed up nationally. U.S. Satellite Lost in Failed Launch from Pacific

The company said in a statement Friday the Intelsat 27 satellite was lost 40 seconds after the launch due to the failure of the Zenit-3SL rocket. The Boeing. Co-built spacecraft was launched Thursday from the Odyssey ocean platform. Sea Launch AG President Kjell Karlsen said the cause of the failure is unknown and the company is working to evaluate it.
