The Magic Finger is a prototype input device developed by Autodesk Research, the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. The ring uses different surfaces as touch interfaces for controlling smartphones or computers.
The device features two optical sensors, a low-resolution, high-speed sensor for tracking movement. It also has a high-resolution camera that can detect 22 different surface textures with 98.9% accuracy.
Gizmag reports that because the Magic Finger can recognize what it touches, surfaces can be programmed as interfaces for remotely controlling devices. For example, you could wipe your finger across your shirt to stop your phone from ringing or tap it on a table to open an app.
