Femtocells: Spectrum Efficiency Improved
One of the scarcest resources in telecom is wireless spectrum and it’s no wonder that carriers pay premium licensing fees for spectrum acquisition. For example, the recent 700 MHz spectrum auction in the U.S. had an aggregate bid value of $19.6 billion and is a testament to the demand for wireless "beachfront property." Since wireless spectrum is such a scarce resource, it is to wireless carriers’ advantage that the spectrum be used most efficiently and to the fullest extent in both outdoor and indoor environments.
