A major telecom equipment manufacturer has predicted that by 2020, “everything that benefits from a network connection will be connected,” and that the number of connected devices will reach 50 billion. The 4G piece of this is high-speed, mobile connectivity; basically providing broadband speeds without a wired connection to the Internet.
The U.S. Army is developing a “self-aware, decision-making network” that will ultimately reduce human decision-making requirements and increase network performance. The Skynet Cognitive Algorithm & Network Design Experiment (CANDE) was designed to enable easier network maintenance, reduce human decision-making requirements, increase network lifetime, transfer data with less delay, and reduce energy consumption.
The ongoing convergence of electrical, solid state photonic and optical technologies has produced a wave of experimental results, new devices and novel applications - with Microwave Photonics (MWP) being a particularly exciting field. Roughly speaking, microwave photonics involves the optical generation, distribution and processing of microwave frequency (40 to 200 GHz) signals imposed on an optical carrier as a modulated envelope.

This past summer, for the first time in the history of LCDTVs, the average selling price (ASP) of a 42” LCDTV dropped below that of a Smartphone. Simultaneously, the excess capacity of LCDTV panels hit its highest level in years with almost no growth forecasted between 2010 and 2011. So what does this tell us? Firstly, dropping prices will not necessarily sell more LCDTVs.

I have heard customers and suppliers express frustration about what they get or do not get from th e distributors with whom they do business. Much of that is simply a function of distribution being an easy target, since they are the ultimate middlemen. Customers are reluctant to place a value on the services that distribution provides and suppliers often don’t want to recognize distribution’s contribution to their sales strategy.
