I'll admit to having been a software engineer in the late 1970s and early 1980s.   I remember coding for 4,8 and 16 bit processors respectively to implement a sound generator for a children's toy, to manage an office telephone system, and to translate nightmare characteristics of some 'raw' graphics hardware into a programmable interface.

HP announced today that it is “exploring strategic alternatives” for its Personal Systems Group and exiting the market for webOS devices, which includes its TouchPad tablet. For years, critics have been agitating for HP to exit the PC business. With the board and executive leadership changes over the past year or so, this criticism died down somewhat.

The motivation behind this crusade is to pave the way for a new natural user interface paradigm that is both bi-manual and multi-modal. Bi-manual connotes that the interface leverages our natural ability to use our two hands to execute complex tasks.

There is a lot of speculation in the industry as to what is behind the Google purchase of Motorola Mobility and likewise a plethora of speculation on the future of Motorola Mobility now that they are part of Google. Though speculation about Google wanting to take on Apple’s iPhone is rampant this deal is clearly about patents and defending Android and not about Google’s new CEO wanting to jump into the hardware game with Apple.
