Can Solar Survive Solyndra Aftermath?
November 3, 2011 1:12 pm | CommentsThe recent collapse of a few high-profile solar energy companies, like Solyndra and Beacon Power , has caused even the most ardent fans of alternative energy to ask, "Can this industry survive?" The answer is a resounding, yes and no. It all depends on what government on all levels does.
Great Expectations
November 3, 2011 8:37 am | CommentsI have heard customers and suppliers express frustration about what they get or do not get from th e distributors with whom they do business. Much of that is simply a function of distribution being an easy target, since they are the ultimate middlemen. Customers are reluctant to place a value on the services that distribution provides and suppliers often don’t want to recognize distribution’s contribution to their sales strategy.

The Fall of Solyndra was Expected and the DoD is Happy
November 1, 2011 3:13 pm | CommentsThe collapse of Solyndra has been the subject of both major news coverage and a foundational bit of political discourse recently. A closer look at the facts reveals that the reality of Solyndra and the solar industry is far from the speculation, especially when viewed from a military perspective.
Printed Electronics Invigorates Old Electronics
October 31, 2011 11:35 am | Commentsby Peter Harrop, Chairman, IDTechEx Most of the well-known objectives of printed electronics remain elusive because they are glamorous, Olympian dreams based on some very exciting demonstrations in laboratories. For example, we plan stretchable, invisible solar cells to go over the whole of a car or building and tightly rollable colour screens and keyboards that unfurl from inside a tiny mobile telephone.

Embedding Systems
October 28, 2011 6:53 am | CommentsThe impact of convergence on the design community is not just increasing in scope, it's also speeding up. Consolidation of functionality and integration of subsystems has meant that the very definition of what an embedded system is becomes more elusive. Even editorially in the industry, the situation has gotten to the point that "ordinary" semiconductors like MOSFETS and diodes are lumped in with passives in the new product sections, and even complex devices like switches and op amps aren't even really considered ICs anymore.
Steve Jobs' Full Legacy Yet to be Written - What's Next?
October 28, 2011 4:27 am | CommentsSteve Jobs’ has left a legacy that is hard to capture. His vision and product from Pixar to Apple are still growing. It is also widely believed that there are more cool products in the pipeline that have Steve’s touch to them – such as a rumored Apple iOS central HDTV. This blog however addresses what I believe will be a tectonic shift in the high technology ecosystem which is likely to happen over the next 12 months.
Create a Decorative Conductive Fabric Button
October 27, 2011 10:11 am | CommentsThese instructions can be used to create a variety of switches- not just the one I've made here. Feel free to change it up and make a button that works with your project, such as a cat button with conductive thread whiskers you can stroke or a guitar button with strummable strings! The type of switch you're making is called a 'momentary' button or switch.
