Fully-Matched Power Amplifier Exhibits High Linear Output Power for Handsets, Tablets and USB Dongle Applications

Avago Technologies has released a linear power amplifier module for mobile and fixed wireless data WiMAX applications that include WiFi and other cellular radios. The new MGA-22103 module features an aggressive gain shape that limits the noise injected into radio receivers co-located in the same device, enabling WiMAX to coexist with WiFi, GPS, PCS and other radios in handsets, tablets, USB dongles and other portable electronics.

The MGA-22103 linear power amplifier is cost-effective and meets industry-standard Spectral Emission Mask (SEM) tests operating at 3.3V. Covering a frequency range of 2.5 to 2.7 GHz, the power amplifier includes fully integrated RF matching. These features are integrated in a compact 3 mm by 3 mm by 1 mm package, allowing designers to achieve standards-compliant performance in space-constrained designs.

Leveraging Avago proprietary GaAs enhancement-mode pHEMT technology, the MGA-22103 module can be used for most high-linearity applications. With superior performance across a range of voltage and temperature levels, the module exhibits flat gain and good matching while providing linear power efficiency to meet stringent mask conditions. The MGA-22103 module meets the IEEE 802.16 WiMAX mask at over 25 dBm power, with high gain of 35 dB across the band. Additionally, a low power mode allows operation at approximately 80 mA when only minimal power is required.

Additional MGA-22103 product features include: •    Integrated CMOS compatible pins for shutdown and low power mode

•    +25 dBm Linear Output Power

•    2.5% error vector magnitude (EVM) 16 QAM WiMAX Modulation at +25 dBm

•    Stable under all loads and conditions

•    Operating Temperature: -40 to +85°C.

Samples and production quantities are available now through the Avago direct sales channel and via worldwide distribution partners. The module is available as part of the Sequans SQN1210 reference design for USB dongles.
