Step-Down Regulator
Linear Technology announces the LTC3416, a 95% efficient synchronous buck regulator, which uses a constant frequency, current mode architecture. The regulator also offers voltage tracking for supply sequencing. It can deliver up to 4 A of continuous output current at voltages as low as 0.8 V from a thermally enhanced TSSOP-20 package. It operates from an input voltage of 2.25 to 5.5V, making it suitable for both single cell Li-Ion, or NiMH applications, as well as more general purpose fixed rail systems. Its switching frequency is programmable from 300 kHz to 4 MHz via a single resistor, ensuring efficiency and allowing the use of capacitors and inductors with less than 1.5 mm profile. Constant frequency operation also keeps switching noise out of critical wireless and xDSL frequency ranges, making it suitable for xDSL modem, cellular basestation, and automotive applications. The device uses internal switches with an RDS(ON) of 0.067 Ω to deliver efficiencies up to 95%. It also utilizes low dropout 100% duty cycle operation to allow output voltages up to VIN.
