Optical Networking Platform Demonstrates Low Energy Use, OPEX Savings

RICHARDSON, Texas -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Fujitsu, announced today that the company’s award-winning FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP) has met the aggressive energy efficiency standards defined in the Telecommunications Energy Efficiency Ratio (TEER) metric, part of a group of power saving standards developed by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS).

Released in May 2009, the TEER standard provides a comprehensive methodology for measuring and reporting energy consumption as well as quantifying a network component’s ratio of work performed to energy consumed.

The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP is the second Fujitsu Network Communications’ solution to meet TEER standards. The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4500 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) became the first in its technology class to meet this industry specification.

According to an Ovum study, in mature markets, the cost of energy alone can represent up to 10 percent of network operating expense (OPEX). While demand for wireline and wireless broadband connectivity continues to accelerate, service providers are upgrading existing, and implementing new, communications infrastructures. As they do so, controlling power consumption has become a priority for budgetary and environmental sustainability reasons.
