Direct Conversion Transceiver Solution

With this single chip direct quadrature modulator, Skyworks offers a direct conversion base transceiver station (BTS) RF subsystem solution materials.

Skyworks announces a comprehensive RF subsystem for next generation cellular infrastructure equipment and other wireless transceiver applications. This solution leverages RF integrated circuit designs that maximize the performance and design simplicity of third and fourth generation (3G and 4G) base station transceivers. The SKY73010 is a monolithic, integrated quadrature modulator for direct modulation of high frequency AM, PM, or compound carriers.

With the introduction of its latest DCR™ component, the SKY73010, Skyworks offers an extensive direct conversion base transceiver station (BTS) RF subsystem solution. The modulator complements the company's other DCR™ BTS building blocks, like the direct quadrature demodulator and direct conversion mixer. When the modulator product is coupled with these other products, the company is able to offer infrastructure subsystem solutions that reduce board size and component count, thereby speeding time-to-market and lowering bill of materials.

Technical Details

The SKY73010 direct quadrature modulator accepts input frequencies from direct current (DC) to 250 MHz with a broad RF and local oscillator (LO) frequency range of 300 to 2500 MHz. It provides broadband noise floor of – 155 dBm/Hz, with 35 and 45 dBc carrier and sideband suppression, respectively, at a LO input power of 0 dBm. Power dissipation for the modulator is 750 mW maximum; LO input power is 0 dBm typical and +6 maximum; the IF input voltage is 1.5 VPP maximum; and thermal resistance is typically 44° C. This device operates in the industrial temperature range.

Applications

The modulator has a variety of applications, including QPSK/GMSK/OAM/DQPSK modulators; single-sideband modulators; image reject mixers; CDMA base stations; GSM/EDGE, TDMA/TDMA-EDGE, and Trans-European Trunked Radio (TETRA) base stations; and as a first upconverter in dual conversion receivers.

Skyworks' infrastructure subsystem is supported and complemented by a portfolio of active and passive discrete components including high-performance switches, LNAs, pin diodes, attenuators, couplers, dielectric resonators, and filters.

The device is manufactured in a Silicon Germanium BiPolar Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (SiGe BiCMOS) process, and a lead-free 16-pin, 4 × 4 mm, RF land grid array (RFLGA) surface mount package.

Skyworks' SKY73010 direct quadrature modulator is immediately available and priced at $5.25 in quantities of 10,000.
