Demand Surges for MEMS That Address Critical Issues

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cypress Envirosystems, a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation today announced it has introduced a Deadband version of its award-winning Wireless Pneumatic Thermostat (WPT).

This product enables older buildings with pneumatic thermostats to have programmable independent heating and cooling setpoints, which increases energy savings.

Legacy pneumatic controls are used in about 70% of the commercial office buildings in the US. These are manually controlled, and virtually all of them have a single temperature setpoint. The Deadband WPT now offers two separate setpoints - one for heating and one for cooling. For example, a heating setpoint can be set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit (68 F), and a cooling setpoint at 75 degrees F. In this case, heating would turn on when the room temperature is below 68 F, and air conditioning would turn on when the room temperature is above 75 F.

"Between these two setpoints however, there would be no heating or cooling, which means much lower energy use," said Marcus Kramer, VP of Engineering for Cypress Envirosystems.

"Many modern digitally controlled buildings have programmable deadband capability, but until now, pneumatically controlled buildings could not take advantage of this energy-saving feature. The Deadband version includes all of the features of our extremely popular standard WPT, but can save even more energy. Just like the standard WPT, it can be installed in minutes, and has an investment payback of less than 18 months," said Harry Sim, CEO of Cypress Envirosystems.
