A/D Converter

National Semiconductor announces a CMOS ADC suitable for applications such as test and measurement and communications equipment. The ADC081000 digitizes signals to 8-bit resolution at sampling rates up to 1.6 GHz while consuming 1.4 W from a 1.9 V nominal supply. The converter is designed with a low BER. At a 1.6 GHz sampling rate and input frequencies up to 100 MHz, the device achieves 0.15 LSB (least significant bits) DNL (differential non-linearity), 0.35 LSB INL (integral non-linearity) and 7.5 ENOB (effective number of bits). This product also features a folding/interpolating architecture. Folding reduces the number of comparators, and interpolation reduces the number of front-end amplifiers required, saving power and reducing the load on the input signal.
