Energy-Efficient Processor Family Targets 1W Video-Enabled Consumer Devices

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation announces the APM8018x, a product family of energy-efficient embedded processors providing one of the industry's smallest form factors for Power Architecture-based product. The embedded processors are designed for a broad range of peripherals for energy-efficient consumer devices ranging from gateways, control panels and energy meters to network attached storage systems, consumer Wi-Fi access points, IP phones, residential gateways, and connected displays. Each of the System-on-a-Chip (SoC) devices in the APM8018x family is designed to deliver server-class processing performance consumer embedded systems that require less than 1W of operating power and low bill-of-material cost. Dramatic increases in volume for user-generated content (UGC) such as photos, music and video require large amounts of storage space and networking performance. These devices are designed to deliver the performance that enables new applications. In connected displays for example, the APM8018x family serves as network co-processor to a video processing subsystem for Internet downloads.
