Freescale Semiconductor announces its ARM9-driven iMX27 processor that offers high resolution video, security, design flexibility, impressive power management and re-use. Optimized for a broad spectrum of mobile consumer and industrial applications, the processor combines Smart Speed technology, an H.264 hardware encoder/decoder, USB, Ethernet, security features and an ARM9 core. With the addition of an on-chip Ethernet MAC and the H.264 D1 resolution video codec to the architecture, it increases the level of video, graphics and connectivity to mobile multimedia devices. The low-power video acceleration and applications software in a single chip provides the ability to increase functionality and decrease power drain and footprint. The processor is suitable for the video surveillance and video and voice over Internet protocol (V2IP) cordless and mobile phone markets as well as point-of-sale applications.
