Single Chip Enables USB Dongles with Future-proofed Performance and Security

The Nordic Semiconductor nRF24LU1™ single chip 2.4 GHz transceiver enables the implementation of ultra-compact, high performance USB dongles for wireless peripherals by providing a true single chip solution in a 5 × 5 mm QFN package with full on-chip security. It is also designed to integrate seamlessly (via Nordic Semiconductor’s unique Enhanced ShockBurst™ hardware link layer) with ultra-low power 2.4 GHz peripherals based on the company’s nRF24L01™ transceiver that needs to be able to run on small batteries for long periods of time. The nRF24LU1 is a true single-chip wireless solution for USB dongles. It requires no external voltage regulator when employed within a product as it can be powered directly from the USB bus using an internal voltage regulator. This chip also generates all necessary clocks from a single 16 MHz external crystal eliminating the need for the second additional crystal typical for a two-chip approach. The nRF24LU1’s internal 16 kbytes of flash can also be used to emulate non-volatile memory, removing the need for an external EEPROM thus reducing PCB area and cost, and enabling the development of ultra-compact USB dongles. The nRF24LU1 Reference Design (product code: nRF24LU1-DONGLE) is a production ready reference design for a compact USB dongle for wireless peripherals using the nRF24LU1 chip.
