MIMO Active Array Antenna Increases Base Station Coverage up to 100 Percent

BARCELONA, MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS –- Powerwave Technologies Inc. recently introduced its multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Active Array Antenna that increases mobile broadband coverage up to 100 percent and reduces power consumption by 40 percent, slashing total operational costs for network providers.

The Powerwave MIMO Active Array Antenna combines the company’s industry-leading remote radio head and antenna technologies into a single integrated design with a 3 dB to 5 dB link budget that doubles a base station’s coverage radius when compared to non-integrated antennas. Similarly, the integrated design reduces power losses to make the antenna a much more cost-effective alternative.

The compact design has the same height, width and front windloading as a conventional antenna, enabling like-for-like swapping of existing tower infrastructure. The MIMO Active Array Antenna is a leading part of Powerwave’s Inside Out Solutions™ network strategy designed to provide ubiquitous mobile broadband coverage both inside buildings and outdoors in large venues.

The MIMO Active Array Antenna is a total solution integrated into a single radome containing all the subsystems necessary to deploy the complete 3G or 4G BTS RF up the tower. These include wideband world radio transceiver, power amplifier with advanced DPD and CFR algorithms, integrated filter and duplexer, low noise amplifier (LNA) and cross-polarized antenna with the greatest gain per unit length. This all-in-one design compared to typical solutions with separate components is quickly and easily deployed and reduces tower lease costs. In addition, with a total weight of less than 20 kg (45 lbs.) and requiring only power and fiber optic data connections, the Powerwave MIMO Active Array can be installed by one person.

Based on Powerwave’s industry-proven software-defined world radio transceiver, the versatile MIMO Active Array Antenna can be used in 3G and/or 4G deployments, in frequency bands form 700 MHz to 2.7 GHz. Solutions deployed in 3G networks can be upgraded to 4G protocols at little or no cost, because no modifications to the tower-top active array antenna are necessary. The antenna supports a wide variety of protocols, including CDMA, WCDMA, HSPA+, WiMAX™ and LTE®.

The MIMO Active Array Antenna is now in carrier trials and will be generally available in Q3 2011.
