Femtocells: Spectrum Efficiency Improved
One of the scarcest resources in telecom is wireless spectrum — and it’s no wonder that carriers pay premium licensing fees for spectrum acquisition. For example, the recent 700 MHz spectrum auction in the U.S. had an aggregate bid value of $19.6 billion and is a testament to the demand for wireless "beachfront property." Since wireless spectrum is such a scarce resource, it is to wireless carriers’ advantage that the spectrum be used most efficiently and to the fullest extent in both outdoor and indoor environments.
